A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)
The real thing in UK Air Support Colours
October 1, 2009
Well, just for a change, the weather has turned up trumps
so far, with bright sunshine and very little wind, so I suspect I
will be off to my flying field for the first time in several weeks
to actually fly a helicopter (or even two or three if I keep lucky
and my lipo stock holds out).
If I get time to continue on this project today, I will be
continuing the long task of trimming down the window apertures, next
to be done are the front windows (all 4) to get them nearer to being ready for
trial glazing.
 |
All
rather boring stuff really, so here are a couple of animated
GIF's
to keep you happy until I get to do something more
interesting

|
Well, I got to fly my SeaWolf, plus another Belt in P&B
format, and even got my CopterX 450 SE V2 airborne for a flight, so
it was a good flight day, but the wind started to pick up off the
Irish sea, so I called it a day and headed back to the hanger to
post flight check the birds and then continue with the MD900 cut out
work. I actually managed to complete the task, so am well
pleased, although I have not yet fitted the various panels in for
testing, or offered up the glazing yet.
Here are a couple of pictures :
CLICK HERE for the whole set of pictures of the MD900
with all apertures fully cut out and shaped.
And to finish off this page, here is the MD900 with the
front and centre engine cowls primed with an initial coat to look
for flaws. Interestingly, the Primer I am using is high build and
comes in yellow, which is of course the colour the top of the
aircraft will be when finished

So, a little more progress has been made, but I also
discovered that the markings in the mould for the recessed access
steps to the front engine cowl were incorrect, and were in fact too
large all around for the steps themselves as provided by
Vario.
I am now adding fibreglass on the inside so that I can fill
them and then re-cut them to the correct size for the recessed
steps.
The moral here is obvious, but I will restate for others
that follow me down this build road :-
CHECK THE CUT OUTS MARKED IN ALL AREAS WITH
THE ITEMS
THAT ARE TO BE FITTED INTO THEM BEFORE YOU CUT THEM OUT
Yes, I know I should have known better, but I just sortta
assumed that a kit that
costs this much would have them marked out correctly on the GRP
fuselage.
