A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)                                  The real thing in UK Air Support Colours

September 29, 2009

Well, to no great surprise, the day has again dawned dull and windy, so it's off back into the hanger for me to continue work on the MD900.

My task to start on today is to cut away the remaining material around all the apertures and vents and shape them up nice and neatly ready to accept the panels.

I have also cut and shaped the starboard pilots door and the starboard side door (passenger / goods door), including filing them down on the back where they are carbon fibre coated to make them fit into the door apertures nice and neatly.

I cut the glass for the starboard pilots door to check it out, and to see if it would effect the fit of the door.  IT DOES, as the glazing material HAS to go right to the front edge, so it is an additional thickness that I will have to try and thin down somehow if the doors are to fit nice and flush.

Completing the aperture cleanup will take about four days all told, as there are a lot of them, what with all the cooling vents and the access hatches.

The owner has asked me to change the paint scheme slightly as he does not want the yellow top paint to come down in a curve to the side doors, which is what the paint on OSCAR99 does.  Some other UK Air Support helicopters do not have this, but rather the yellow is kept to a straight line joint with the bottom paint at the level of the straight bottom edge of the main engine cowlings. (You can see this in the top right image of a UK Air Support police MD900)

Our protoype
OSCAR99 (G-HPOL)
looks like this :

Here are a few pictures of the new starboard apertures and with the doors taped on.

Looks quite good really with both the doors fitted in nice and flush...
