A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)                                  The real thing in UK Air Support Colours

October 30, 2009

Well, still do not have the Vario parts, so am pretty well stuck right now. Therefore I decided to give my trusty old soldering iron some work to do, and started to try to make up some windshield wipers for the MD900.  These are quite hefty, and as you can see, have a secondary control arm that goes from the main pivot up to the blade itself.

I found some old Piano wire used for shaft drives for the tail rotors many years ago, and went to work.

The first thing was to make the main arm, which you may just be able to see is actually two pieces of wire soldered together along the full length.  These will of course be filled to appear to be a slid piece of metal when finished.

Next came the wiper arm supports, which are made from some thinner piano wire, and soldered to the top of the main arm. The final trick for the arms themselves was to make up and fix the secondary arms, made from the original diameter wire, and solder them in place.

Yet to work out is how to make up the rubber blades themselves, so I really need to dig through my odds and sods boxes to come up with something suitable for this task.

The final trick will be to gently bend the arms and blades so that they fit the curve of the windshield.

As you can see from the steel rule in the first picture, these are about 8 inches in overall length...

Here they are after bending to fit the screen more accurately and being painting, and fitted temporarily to the windshield...  There is also the newly elongated camera pod, as the owner decided he wanted it to be longer than it was originally, to more closely match the prototype camera pods.

This pictures shows the newly elongated
camera pod as well as the wipers

Here is the elongated camera pod alone,
waiting to be sanded down and painted

All in all quite a successful day considering I am almost at a stop until the remaining Vario parts arrive.
