A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)
The real thing in UK Air Support Colours
October
26, 2009
Well, another
dull Monday, so back into the hanger to do some more on the 900.
The first task
on my schedule today has been to carefully drill out recesses for
the door holding magnets in both the doors and the door frames so
that the magnets just touch each other when the door is fitted in
place nice and flush. I have found that the magnets provided
by Vario are not very strong at all. They do just hold the
door, but the front doors will definitely need the catch assembly
provided by Vario to keep them tightly shut in flight.
To get them
into the door frames, I have added a thing piece of plywood on the
inside of the door frames into which the magnet is recessed and
glued. Then the wood is glued to the frame and finally trimmed back
and painted black so that it is hardly noticeable, even from the
inside.
The doors were
not quite as delicate, as there is just enough material in the frame
area to achieve the correct depth of recess for these small magnets,
but you sure have to be careful not to go too deep, or the recess
could end up going right through the door completely.
I have also
mounted the tail skid in the back of the boom, adding an additional
thin layer of fibreglass and resin over it for extra strength in
case of a heavy landing on the back, as these NOTAR's do seem to
make quite tail heavy approaches, even the full size ones.
So once that
has all set completely, I am now ready to finally mount the NOTAR
into the back end of the boom. I have decided to use 5 screws
rather than the 3 suggested by Vario, again to provide a little
additional strength, even though this may well not be strictly
necessary. I have secured the long rectangular plastic
"conduit" provided by Vario to carry the extension wire
that goes to the tail servo mounted right at the very back to the
top of the boom on the inside, and am now working on adding a couple
of fittings to let the navigation lights wiring run alongside this
conduit to the front of the boom.
My last task
of the day was to carefully finish off the final shaping of the
glazing material so that all the edges are nice and level and the
glazing panels fit into each aperture exactly. I cannot fit
these yet of course, but at least it will be a straightforward task
to fit them once I have completed the paint work.
The one piece
navigation lights were becoming a real nuisance frankly, as I have
them fitted to the tail surfaces, but the rest of the wiring and the
front pair of Red/Green LED'S are just hanging around together with
the plug to connect to the RX on a pretty long wire, so I decided to
cut them, and add some electrical connectors that will be accessible
from within the fuselage area, making the future removal or access
of the tail area much easier

I decided to
press on and get the hinges positioned on the front doors, which is
always a fiddly job.
Unfortunately,
Vario provide what are presumably "standard" hinges, so
you have to cut a chunk off one end of each of them. In fact,
I chose to leave the lower hinge complete, as there was room for it,
but the upper ones had to be cut.
The results
came out very well, with the doors opening and closing nice and
smoothly, as shown below.
I cannot fit
the handles yet, as the final coats of paint have to be done, and I
will also need to remove the hinges again to paint them due to
having to cut a piece off them.
The next task
will be the rear doors, getting them to fit and slide
correctly. I suspect this will be an even more fiddly task.
Still waiting
on the engine and head kit, plus the titanium grease needed to
finally assemble the gearbox and the NOTAR tail cone.
Hopefully they will arrive any day now.
