A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)                                  The real thing in UK Air Support Colours

October 19,2009

Yep, the weather did it again, damp, grey skies and thoroughly miserable up here in Blackpool, so there was no good reason not to continue work on the MD900.

I decided to start detailing the various cockpit accessories, such a as cyclic and the collective control sticks. I amusing electric blue metallic paint for the shafts, and silver in the appropriate places.  Hopefully this will add a bit more life to an otherwise slightly drab black and grey cockpit.

I have also applied the final coat of lacquer to the horizontal stabilizer, so once that is dry I can mount the white navigation beacon on the top surface permanently.  As soon as the vertical fins have dried from the blue central flash the owner asked for, I will be able to rub them down and lacquer them, and then the final task for the stabilizers will be to fit the vertical fins to the horizontal stabilizer.

Although the prototype actually has control of the angle of the vertical fins via the rudder controls, a little sadly the model will not have this feature.

The reason I am doing stuff like this that would of course normally wait until a lot later on in the build is because I am still waiting for the engine and rotor head kits to arrive, and apparently we are waiting on Vario Germany to ship them over to the UK,

So I also continue to slowly flat down the main fuselage tub with 1200 wet & dry between light colour coats, which is along and painstaking process, but the surface is getting pretty good right now.  It should be pretty well ready for it's final colour coat before the end of this week.

However, I cannot do until the missing kits arrive, as I still have to mount the mechanics tub, which is sure to leave some final making good to be done.  It looks like the cockpit may well be installed before I get around to mounting the mechanics at this rate.

Still damp and even more windy so back to work on the MD900. Mostly odds and sods really today.

As  you can see from these pictures, most of today has again been spent working on the cockpit.

Lightening/access holes have been cut in the floor formers, the pedal clusters and cyclic sticks fitted, and the collective sticks are about to be fitted.

The instruments are still the scan copies of the real thing, printed out on plain paper, and show up a lot lighter than they will be once I use the proper Vario transfers.

There is still some more finishing needed on the seat pads themselves, and the cockpit floor will be given a final clean and coat of lacquer to finish it looking like a new helicopter before the rest of the furniture is finally fixed in place..
I also decided it was a good time to paint the inside of the fuselage the obligatory black. This is the first coat in semi matt black to get some colour cover on the original white GRP.

The next coat will be gloss black, and that will include doing the inside of the doors so it all matches nicely.

I also finally got around to fitting the strengthening plate across the front undercarriage line, but this time using the special epoxy glue recommended by Vario, which takes around 3 days to cure - hence the mole wrenches you can see holding the wood in place.

At the request of the owner of the MD 900, I have taped the boom in place and lain the tail surfaces in place loosely and taken pictures of it with a Belt CP so that he can assess it's actual size.  You can view these pictures if you wish by clicking the link here.
