A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)                                  The real thing in UK Air Support Colours

October 16, 2009

Well, this morning dawned with a clear blue sky, light winds, and in fact a really gorgeous autumnal day in Blackpool.

So I took an hour for myself and shot off to my favourite flying field with my SeaWolf (Belt CP mechanics) and my CopterX 450 SE V2 to have a little fun and to remind myself that I can still fly an RC helicopter.

No accidents or problems, so a really nice hour spent flying my own helicopters before returning to the heat of the workshop. (It's hot in there because I have the heating going flat out to let the acrylic paint dry properly)

I wanted to get the main fuselage section (lower section) with a really good base coat of colour today, which I managed, and while that has been left drying, I ploughed on with cockpit detail a little more, as well as doing the final pre top coat rubbing down on the two port side doors ready for their final coats.

I still have to drill the holes for the handles, and the holes for the front door hinges, but they will of course be done before the final top coat of colour and the final lacquer coat is applied.

So really there are not too many pictures to show for today's work, apart from these showing the current status of the cockpit.  The instruments on there are not the final Vario ones, they are colour prints taken from a scan of the Vario transfers, just to check sizing etc.

I am pleased to say that the cockpit is starting to take shape quite reasonably now, with the centre console in grey as per the prototypes helicopters.  You can just see in the lower right picture that I have also added a small smoked perspex anti glare cover over the top warning light display to avoid the pilot having reflections on them from the sunlight !  The real ones have a fixed metal cover over them, but I felt the smoked perspex looked rather nicer, and does the same job.

The pilots seats are finally coming on OK now, and I think I will be leaving them as shown above with white frames with black seating, as it looks quite good, especially when it's on the black cockpit floor.

I still have a bit more finishing work to do on the material of the seats, and have a couple of ideas I want to try out on them before saying what those ideas are.

Finally for today I also managed to get around to permanently fitting the special (and crucial) fibreglass ring that is epoxied into the rotating tail cone using UHU End Fest two part adhesive, which is a long curing adhesive recommended by Vario, but once any item is stuck with it they are totally immovable once it has fully cured.

This ring must be fitted totally square to the tail cones centre axis, as the entire tail cone will rotate on this ring (with some titanium grease applied on the inside) and the servo that it is fitted to at the other (back) end.  I feel pretty comfortable that this one is positioned correctly.
