A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)                                  The real thing in UK Air Support Colours

In the lack of the engine and head kits, I decided to get started on the woodwork for the cockpit, and trimming the centre console and instrument panel into basic shape. (The instruments you can see are just a paper copy of the scanned instruments for positioning, and are slightly smaller than true size...)
The woodwork has been given single thin coat of the normal blue, but will probably end up being the correct green that is used in all aircraft for all hidden panels such as the supports you can see in the picture on the left.
So, we have moved on a little bit more at least.

The cockpit kit that comes from Vario is made from a very thin & flimsy black plastic material that needs to be trimmed.  I immediately decided that I would line both the main instrument panel and the centre console with some nice light strengthening material to give it better rigidity.

The cockpit floor uses two additional strips of wood that are fitted to the sides of the cabin to support it, plus a rather flimsy single thin piece of ply that goes vertically down to the floor at the back.  For safety, I also strengthened that rear support a little more, by adding a triangular strengthener across the bottom where it joins the floor of the cockpit.

Because I don't yet have all the kits, I cannot assess where the COG is going to be, but I suspect that I will need to install the twin 4.8V batteries for the radio under the cockpit floor, so I need to make it reasonably accessible for quickish removal.

The client has also asked me to put a rear bulkhead at the back of the cockpit so that the fuel tank etc cannot be seen from the front.  I will be looking at this, but again feel this will need to be removable from the cockpit floor independently to allow the cockpit to be moved sufficiently to allow access underneath it.

This part of the build is quite time consuming all things considered.
