A built Vario MD 900 kit (by Vario)                                  The real thing in UK Air Support Colours

October 11, 2009

Yep, another damp and pretty windy day, so we will progress some more...

Today I wanted to finish cutting out the Port side doors and doing the glazing recess work etc, plus start preparing the tail surfaces to ensure that I can get the navigation lights in as I want them.

I also decided to dry mount the mechanics "tub" and trim the engine covers to allow them to fit over it.

And the same from behind,
also showing the NOTAR assembly

The NOTAR assembly in more detail
(excuse the dusty fingerprints)

Now with the rear engine cover in place

And finally, with both engine covers on. You can see from this just how high up the mechanics are mounted, you almost have room to do a scale rear compartment underneath them....

So, as you can see from the pictures above, progress has been quite today overall.

Unfortunately I am still waiting for the engine kit to arrive from Vario, and that includes the (substantial) lower supporting struts for the mechanics tub, therefore I cannot go ahead and fit it in place even temporarily just yet.

The same applies to the head kit.  As you can see, I do have the 5 bladed rotor head, but none of the rest of the parts for the head, so I cannot finalise the top aperture on the engine covers until that arrives as well.

I must say that the design for the mechanics is pretty good, as you really do not have to build a whole pile of woodwork that always ends up looking like the result of some crazy jigsaw puzzle with this one.  The Fibreglass mounting for the entire mechanics system is strengthened considerably with some thick ply laminated into the bottom floor, and all you have to do to it really is cut out the hole in the bottom for access by the starter, add some ply strengthening plates for the side mount points, and then add the three support tubes that go to the floor to fix it all together really solidly.

The tray sits neatly on top of the fuselage, with the engine covers then sitting on top of that. You glue the tray on to the top rail, and then trim of any excess at the sides, and it is the legs that then tension it down to the floor of the aircraft.

Equally, the large fibreglass duct that carries the high pressure air back down to the boom to the NOTAR drive fits neatly into the back of the mounting tray, making the entire installation neat and effective.
