Building the Interceptor 400 Collective Pitch helicopter complete with the Alien Command Auto Pilot

Click this link to find out just how little it costs for me provide you with a
ready built and flight tested Interceptor 400
, with our without Alien Command fitted.

The Interceptor 400C AC Combo kit with Alien Command that I am building here has been very kindly donated to me by Helivol, the main UK distributors, and my sincere thanks go to them for giving me this opportunity to build the machine and to be able to fully document it here on the ChopperAddict Web site.

The Interceptor 400 is a new RC collective pitch helicopter that is available today for new potential pilots who want to learn to fly an RC helicopter.  It has been introduced to the market specifically as a reasonably low cost, well specified machine that does not try to force you to buy a complete combo with radio etc as is the case with the Esky Belt CP or Eflite Blade 400, but instead it leaves it to you to select the radio, servos, and other electronics to your choice and wallet. To my mind, this is a far better way of doing things, although I accept that it is perhaps a little harder for the total novice.  Because of this, the Interceptor 400 is not only available as a basic kit, but also as a combo kit that includes ACER LABS servos, motor, ESC, so all you have to choose separately is the radio system you prefer to purchase.

In fact, the Interceptor 400 is basically an X400 or EXI 400 as it was often called, with some subtle changes to it.

You can buy the Interceptor 400 combo kit (in ARTF form, which means almost Ready To Fly) without any radio equipment for around £155, and this includes almost everything you need to be able to fly it except the gyro and Lipo battery, and of course your choice of radio equipment, or for around £275 you can have it plus what is the very good Spektrum DX6i radio included.

Therefore, you can see that at the price, it is a fairly low cost helicopter, comparing well with the Belt CP which comes in with a (not very good) radio at £140, so the Interceptor 400 is still a good choice for both potential and indeed for reasonably experienced helicopter pilots.

The Interceptor 400C AC combo kit, which is what I am going to be building here, comes with 1 x ACER-LAB 3100KV electric MOTOR, 4 x ACER-LAB A8-SG Servos, and an ACER LABS 40 Amps ESC.  Helivol have also provide me with the Acer G1000 gyro

Other than the radio system, the only other items you still need to buy are a LIPO battery and a charger for the LIPO.

Shown above is the first thing we are going to build, the main frame, which is made from a lightweight but very strong aluminium anodised in black. As you can see, the frame has been well designed so that it is nice and open, making it very easy to access other parts that will be inside the frame later on for maintenance etc.

The mainshaft support design is very similar indeed to the Align Trex 450 and CopterX 450, using only TWO main bearings, rather than the three main bearing used by the Esky Belt CP.

THE BUILD

Shown above is the box that arrive via UPS, and the first thing that struck me was how small the box is, as you can see from my wristwatch in front of it. It was under 0.5Kilo to ship as well.

And here is everything that was in that little box...  Again my wristwatch is there on the right to give you an idea of size.

I am going to start as suggested by the documentation provided by assembling the rotor head.

However, it is worth noting that although I received the full kit, NOT an ARTF system, the documentation in the box was only for the ARTF system, although it does contain exploded diagrams of all the parts at the back, those drawings are not really sufficient for anyone unfamiliar with building helicopters.

The good news however is that a quick visit to this web site, or indeed to the Helivol web site will let you download a PDF that is specifically designed for the basic kit, so you will need to get that.  I will be "borrowing" images from that documentation in this build report where I feel I want to clarify certain important points.
